Olly Swann – my first few weeks at Newtrality
What attracted you to join Newtrality?
I knew a number of the team already – that was a massive factor, but equally so was the consistent messaging I’d received about the organisation’s culture and values, from both staff and clients alike. Newtrality has been doing great work for a few years now, and their brand and reputation have grown accordingly, so having the opportunity to be a part of their ongoing and exciting growth journey was too good to turn down.
What have you been working on so far?
To date, my work has predominantly been focused on both developing and refining some Newtrality propositions, business development activity with several new and existing clients and helping to create the right internal conditions for our consulting team to flourish.
What’s surprised you about your first few weeks?
Probably the breadth of expertise and the depth of commitment that already exists across the organisation. Coming in from the outside, you have an expectation of what a business is going to be like, but you don't fully appreciate the quality of the people and the amount of knowledge and experience that exists until you're inside it.
How would you describe the team and culture?
I can’t speak highly enough of the Newtrality team – their capabilities, their pride and enthusiasm for the work they do, and how they’ve made me feel since I joined, are all really impressive. The culture is genuinely collaborative and inclusive, and everybody feels empowered and trusted to contribute, regardless of their grade or experience. That is really refreshing and something to be cherished.
What are you looking forward to next?
I’m particularly excited about further developing our consulting propositions, building stronger relationships with clients and helping shape how we respond to the significant changes happening across local government. There’s a real opportunity to be more distinctive in how we combine strategic thinking with practical delivery. I’m also looking forward to working with the team to build something that is commercially resilient, delivers real impact for clients and creates opportunities for people to develop and grow. There’s a lot to do, but that’s what makes the next phase of our growth journey so exciting.
Quick-fire round
Three words to describe your first few weeks: Energising, insightful and refreshing.
One thing you’ve learned already: That I can actually hike over 26 miles with no training - being thrust straight into the ‘Earth, Mind & Shire’ Public Sector Challenge was a harsh but rewarding induction exercise!
Best part of your role so far: Getting to know my new colleagues.
Tea or coffee: It depends on the time of day but given the choice I'd probably opt for coffee - a strong white americano usually hits the spot.
